There were no synthetic materials, like vinyl or rubber; it was a point of pride for the cobbler or cordonnier to create footwear with durable, tanned leathers that fit well and withstood the weather of many seasons. Shoes were a luxury item, to be cared for and worn for many years.

Craftsmanship

Each moccasin or slipper is created by following traditional Indigenous techniques, passed down through generations. Hand-stitched and trimmed, each one is cut, assembled, and finished to exacting standards in the workshop by gifted artisans.

Time-Honoured Materials

Laurentian Chief footwear is made with exceptional hides, leathers, and pelts. The company honours Indigenous values and uses eco-friendly practices to produce their hides and furs.

It is estimated that goods made with high quality, full-grain leather last 5-6 times longer than those made with synthetics. Leather and fur can be repurposed, when needed, and are biodegradable.

Canadian Made

Laurentian Chief moccasins are entirely Canadian-made by the Eugène Cloutier company in Quebec City. While much of today’s clothing and footwear now comes from factories or sweatshops overseas, Eugène Cloutier has been manufacturing footwear in Canada since 1945.
